What is Hyperemesis Gravidarum?
Days ago, the Royal family had announced to the public that Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince William is soon to welcome their third baby. As the announcement states, Kate is forced to cancel her duties and that she should rest until delivery.
A lot of us are wondering what Hyperemesis Gravidarum is. Is it a life threatening condition? Does it harm the health of the mother? How about the baby? Well here's the answer.
Hyperemesis Gravidarum is defined as a condition during pregnancy which is characterized by excessive nausea and vomiting, (morning sickness) weight loss and electrolyte imbalance. During pregnancy, nausea and vomiting are normal because HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) hormone level rises, but in Hyperemesis Gravidarum, the nausea is accompanied with excessive vomiting that can cause severe dehydration and loss of electrolytes and is in need of immediate medical attention. Normally, nausea will subside 11-14 weeks and most pregnant women feel relieved 20 weeks after. So, it is very important to determine morning sickness against Hyperemesis Gravidarum so that one can assess if control measures are necessary. Here are other signs and symptoms of Hyperemesis Gravidarum: excessive fatigue, headache, fainting and weight loss. Remember, do not take any OTC medication and consult your doctor about your condition.
The common management is rest, it will help you relax and gain energy and most importantly, it wont stress out your baby. Avoid strenuous activities like running, lifting heavy tools and many others. Drink lots of water and avoid foods that are oily and spicy. Lessen the consumption of salty foods. Some women chew menthol candies or bubblegums to ease the nausea. Eat foods rich in vitamins and minerals and consume lots of warm soup to avoid dehydration. Lastly, talk to your baby about what you feel and reassure him/her that it is going to be alright.
